When It’s Better Not To Brush

May 26, 2017

enamel erosion Dallas

Though thin and partially translucent, tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body and has the essential job of protecting teeth from constant use and the continual assault of chemicals in food and drink. Enamel also preserves tooth nerves from hot and cold food and beverages. That’s why enamel loss often causes tooth sensitivity.

Cuts heal. Bruises fade. Broken bones mend. The body’s ability to heal itself is truly extraordinary. But tooth enamel is different. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

The team at The Lewisville Dentist encourages our patients to protect their tooth enamel for a lifetime of dental health.

This may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes it is better NOT to brush immediately after eating. Specifically, after eating acidic items. The acid weakens the enamel which can be further weakened by brushing. Waiting 60 minutes will allow the acid to dilute. Rinsing immediately after eating acidic foods is useful, however, because it washes away some food particles and speeds up the dilution of the acid.

Some people don’t realize that dry mouth can cause or exacerbate enamel erosion. The calcium and phosphate in saliva guards your enamel. When there is little saliva, the enamel is left vulnerable. Chewing stimulates saliva production but constant snacking is not the answer for dry mouth. Chewing sugar-free gum and sipping water regularly can stimulate saliva production between meals without increasing the risk of or upping your calorie intake.

In addition, tooth grinding wears enamel away. If you are one of the many Lewisville residents who grinds their teeth at night, it’s important to get a mouthguard straightaway. People who grind their teeth are at a high risk for enamel erosion and the tooth decay that can follow. Athletes should also guard their teeth on the playing field with a mouthguard. For more details, talk to The Lewisville Dentist about custom mouthguards.

If you sip soda, tea, or coffee all day, we suggest you switch to water to halt any enamel erosion that has already occurred. It may be a hard change to make – but if you are successful – your teeth will thank you for it.

Using teeth as tools can impair enamel, as well. Take a moment to fetch scissors before tearing a package or ripping duct tape with your teeth. Do you really want to take a chance on chipping a tooth just to open a package of lunchmeat?

Chewing ice and hard candy can also hurt enamel. If you simply must have sugar, soft candy is best as long as it is not left to sit on teeth for long period of time. If your molars are packed with gummy candy, it can lead to cavities which erode enamel just as surely as chipping it with hard candy. Many of the old-school hard candies we enjoyed as kids now come in soft versions. Enjoy them sparingly because constant sugar is bad for teeth. Period.

If you have already experienced enamel erosion or other dental problems, The Lewisville Dentist can help you guard what is left. To schedule a thorough examination, contact The Lewisville Dentist in Lewisville at 214-731-7925!

Has Your Toddler Had A Dental Exam?

May 19, 2017

Pediatric Dentist Lewisville If you have a toddler who has not been to a dentist, we urge you to consider making an appointment today by calling The Lewisville Dentist at 214-731-7925.

The best time to start dental check-ups for young children is when their teeth first appear. This may seem a bit early, however it is a great time to become acquainted with preventative dentistry options such as sealants and fluoride supplements. Your dentist can assess the health of your child’s teeth before problems begin and it’s also helpful for parents to get a refresher course on proper oral hygiene for young children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to begin children’s dentist visits before the third birthday. If you have questions about pediatric dentistry, please give us a call at The Lewisville Dentist.

Children with an increased risk of dental problems should receive a dental examination as early as possible. Here are some of the risk factors:

  • Sleeping with a bottle
  • Drinking juice continually during the day
  • Abnormal tooth development
  • Thumb sucking
  • Tooth grinding
  • A mother with significant tooth decay
  • Other health problems

Bring your questions to our involved staff at The Lewisville Dentist. We are located at 297 W FM 3040 Ste 127 in Lewisville, Texas. You can reach us at 214-731-7925. We want your child to have a healthy smile right from the start and enjoy a lifetime of oral health.

Because everyone deserves to smile!

What Does Your Saliva Reveal?

May 12, 2017

Lewisville dentists know that a mouth examination can reveal problems in other parts of the patient’s body. Because many diseases manifest in soft tissues of the mouth or cause pain in the jaw, dentists often refer patients to their medical doctor for further diagnosis when they encounter issues such as inflammation, chronic bad breath, bleeding gums, or jaw pain.

Healthcare providers may soon have another oral diagnostic tool for detecting systemic diseases – a test that analyzes the molecules in saliva.

“UCLA researchers are working on a test that could have the ability to diagnose diseases like diabetes and cancer. It’s conceivable that dentists will soon be able to take saliva samples that can be tested for numerous diseases. And if that happens, disease diagnosis will be much simpler for all parties.”1

At The Lewisville Dentist, we help patients maintain optimum oral health and remarkable smiles with advanced cosmetic dentistry. However, we also understand how the state of your dental health affects the rest of your body. You can think of your dentist as an indispensable member of your complete healthcare team who is dedicated to your overall health and well-being.

If you are in need of dental care, we invite you to schedule an examination and cleaning by calling The Lewisville Dentist. Some of our most popular treatments at The Lewisville Dentist include sedation dentistry, dental implants, and Invisalign. We also do oral cancer screening.

7 Ways Bonding Can Beautify

May 5, 2017

Dallas Cosmetic Dentist

Dental bonding is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure in the Dallas area, but there are many patients who don’t know exactly what it is. Today in the The Lewisville Dentist dental blog, we explain 7 ways dental bonding is used in cosmetic dentistry.

The dental bonding procedure uses a resin material that is sturdy and tooth-colored. It is applied to the teeth while soft, like putty, and then hardened or set with a special light. The material bonds with the tooth and can then be shaped and polished.

Dentists will usually consider the option of bonding when 1) decayed, 2) chipped, or 3) cracked teeth need to be repaired.

4) Large spaces between teeth can be filled with bonding material, and 5) roots can be protected by bonding after gums recede.

6) Discolored teeth can also be improved using the bonding process, and, since the material is easily shaped, teeth can be made to 7) look longer or just have the general shape changed. Bonding is often used, along with teeth whitening as part of a total smile makeover.

The Lewisville Dentist, offers the following services:

sedation dentistry
dental implants
Invisalign
dentures

So, if you are in the Coppell, Valley Ranch, or Flower Mound area and are in need of dental care or have cosmetic dentistry questions, please give us a call at 214-731-7925.

Bad Breath Q & A

April 21, 2017

Lewisville bad breath exam

Today’s post offers some answers to common questions about bad breath.

Q. My wife says my breath is horrible, but I brush twice a day. Shouldn’t that be enough?
A. Bacteria can multiply and stink in hidden crevices that can only be reached with floss. Time to start flossing. If your breath hasn’t improved in a few months, make an appointment so we can examine other possible causes of your halitosis.

Also keep in mind that brushing just the teeth may not remove food particles between the teeth and up in the gums. Gently brushing the gums, sides of the mouth and the tongue in addition to the teeth may make the difference.

Q. My breath seems to get worse during hay fever season. What’s up with that?
A. Allergies can change mouth odor in a couple of ways. First, anything that stimulates post-nasal drip can be a trigger because bacteria at the back of the throat mixes with the mucous and gives off a smelly odor as it breaks down. Second, hay fever medications often cause dry mouth which can lead to smelly breath. Antihistamines can lessen post-nasal drip so this is a catch-22. If you take antihistamines, drink water frequently throughout the day to keep your mouth moist, suck on sugar-free mints to stimulate saliva production, and rinse with a non-alcohol mouth rinse.

Q. What health conditions can bring about bad breath?
A. As explained before, any condition that lessens saliva production typically causes halitosis. It is also a common side effect of diabetes, kidney failure, and liver failure. Of course, if your kidneys or liver is failing, you have bigger problems.

Q. Why did my wife’s breath became dreadful when she went on a strict low-carb diet?
A. Ketones were possibly the culprit. Ketones are produced when the body digests fat – which is usually the goal of a low-carb plan. On the flip side, she was probably not cheating!

The Lewisville Dentist Can Make Your Whites Whiter

April 14, 2017

Whiter Whites in Lewisville

At the Lewisville Dentist, one of the most common requests we get from dental patients is whiter teeth.

I am happy to say that Lewisville dental patients are in luck when it comes to teeth whitening in Texas, because cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening and veneers are safe, effective, and affordable.

Some Lewisville patients might be interested in bleaching their teeth at home. There are many affordable teeth whitening products available at Coppell, Valley Ranch, and Flower Mound drugstores. Remember that even though you are doing this procedure at home, you should discuss it with your dentist and report any sensitivity that may occur.  These kits take multiple uses to provide results and you need to be certain your oral health is taken into account.

There are many dentists in the Dallas area that offer in-office teeth bleaching which can often be done in one visit. Dallas residents who do in-office bleaching usually appreciate the care that is given to protect the soft tissues of the mouth from the bleaching agent.

Any toothpaste that has an added polishing agent is considered a whitening toothpaste. For my patients, I always tell them to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance when purchasing these.

As you can see, there are a lot of great ways to attain a whiter smile.

If you’re interested in any of these whitening methods or a complete smile makeover, call The Lewisville Dentist at 214-731-7925. Our involved staff will schedule a cosmetic dental consultation at your convenience.

We hope to hear from you soon!

Don’t Let Poor Oral Health Take You Out Of The Game

April 7, 2017

Coppell cosmetic dental and tooth implants

It’s hard to win a gold medal if you have a toothache. A recent study cited in the British Journal of Sports Medicine explored how poor oral health affects athletic performance at the elite level.

“More than 40% of athletes were bothered by their oral health with 28% reporting an impact on quality of life and 18% on training and performance.”1

The dental troubles experienced by Olympians and professional athletes are not any different than those found in the general population: tooth decay, dental erosion, periodontal disease, and inflammation around partially erupted wisdom teeth. It’s vital to note that these troubles are largely preventable.

Athletes are also at risk for mouth injuries suffered while competing or training.  Tooth trauma can prevent injured athletes from competing in the short term and cause ongoing complications down the road.

Whether you are an Olympic runner or a busy Lewisville working mom who seems to be running all the time, dental health affects your overall health and quality of life. Don’t let your performance suffer because of poor oral health.

If it has been a while since you have had a dental exam, we invite you to schedule a check-up and cleaning by calling The Lewisville Dentist at 214-731-7925.

The Lewisville Dentist is located at 297 W FM 3040 Ste 127 in Lewisville, Texas. We provide general and cosmetic dental procedures including dental crowns and general dentistry. You can read more about our services at http://www.thelewisvilledentist.com

Are Dental Veneers Reversible?

March 31, 2017

prepless veneers

With many Lewisville residents looking to improve their smile, porcelain veneers are a celebrated option in the Texas cosmetic dental community. Unlike a crown that completely covers the tooth, a veneer is a super thin layer of a very heavy-duty porcelain, composite bonding, or ceramic. When bonded to a tooth, the veneer creates a natural, translucent, and perfect new surface. It improves the appearance of the visible portion of your tooth instantly.

To begin, you will need a consultation with your dentist, who should have know-how in cosmetic procedures. You should consider what you do not like about your smile and know how you want it improved. Veneers may not be prime for you. Other cosmetic dental procedures are available that may be a better fit for the characteristics you wish to change.

Porcelain veneers can repair many minor to moderate troubles, including the size, shape, and color of your teeth. Gaps between teeth can be filled, as well as the lengthening or shortening of teeth to complete your attractive smile.

Your dentist will also discuss both types of veneers: “traditional” and “prepless.” Before a traditional veneer is put on the tooth, the dentist first removes a very thin layer of enamel. Enamel cannot be replaced, which is one reason this protocol is irreversible.

The second method is called “no-prep” or “prepless.” With this type, enamel removal is generally not required. When no enamel is removed, the treatment can be reversible. However, this protocol has specific criteria.

Furthermore, it is possible to use both types of veneers for multiple teeth, depending on the condition of each tooth.

Your dentist will help you evaluate your unique needs and counsel you on how to reach your goals. Once you and your dentist have created a dental plan, your dentist will work with a laboratory and dental team to assure everything is carried out as discussed.

If you do not have a cosmetic dentist, we invite you to visit our extraordinary practice at 297 W FM 3040, Ste 127 in Lewisville. Call 214-731-7925 today to schedule a cosmetic dental consultation.

Smile Makeover Questions Answered At The Lewisville Dentist

March 24, 2017

Flower Mound cosmetic smile makeover

Even some Lewisville people with top notch oral health want to improve specific components of their smile. Though proper brushing is critical for healthy teeth, it won’t re-contour a gumline or repair a chipped tooth. A cavity-free mouth may still have stained or misaligned teeth.

If you want to correct the smile elements that can’t be improved with diligent oral hygiene, call 214-731-7925 to schedule a smile makeover consultation with The Lewisville Dentist. During your consultation, we will meet with you about:

Cost
Each smile makeover is completely unique, therefore the price varies from patient to patient depending on the specific procedures performed. During your consultation, we will give you an estimate for your smile transformation.

Function
Proper function is priority one. Your cosmetic dental smile makeover will maintain or improve your ability to talk, eat, and smile.

Beauty
This is probably the main reason you are choosing to transform your smile. Our dental team will describe the cosmetic improvements you can expect and the technical details about the procedures.

Sedation
If your smile makeover requires several hours of treatment, or if you have dental anxiety, you may want to consider sedation. Ask us to explain your sedation options and the associated costs.

Health
If you have existing tooth decay or gum disease, these issues need to be addressed prior to your cosmetic concerns. It may be possible to combine required restorative procedures with your cosmetic work.

If you are interested in learning more about cosmetic dental smile makeovers, call us today at 214-731-7925.
